How to Be a High School Superstar by Cal Newport – [PDF Download]

What if getting into your reach schools didn’t require four years of excessive A.P.-taking, overwhelming activity schedules, and constant stress?

In How to Be a High School Superstar, Cal Newport explores the world of relaxed superstars students who scored spots at the nation’s top colleges by leading uncluttered, low stress, and authentic lives.

Drawing from extensive interviews and cutting-edge science, Newport explains the surprising truths behind these superstars’ mixture of happiness and admissions success, including:

1. Why doing less is the foundation for becoming more impressive.

2.Why demonstrating passion is meaningless, but being interesting is crucial.

3. Why accomplishments that are hard to explain are better than accomplishments that are hard to do.

These insights are accompanied by step-by-step instructions to help any student adopt the relaxed superstar lifestyle proving that getting into college doesn’t have to be a chore to survive, but instead can be the reward for living a genuinely interesting life.

This book tries to give advice on how you can stand out among other applicants when applying to college. However I think that it’s applicable to job applications as well. Newport’s main message is, that less is more.

That instead of overloading your schedule with different extracurricular activities, you should schedule free time to explore and focus your energy on your main interest. Something special that makes you interesting. Then some average grades won’t hurt you.

But the cases he describes are those of students who engaged in outstanding activities, like founding companies and writing books, which undoubtably makes you stand out, but are things that only a few people can achieve and were all accompanied by great chance.

Also I feel like it’s unfortunate that Newport focuses so much on trying to stand out for applications. We should pursue our interests and focus on them because we love doing it, because it gives us joy and purpose and we meet people sharing our interests.

That indeed makes us interesting, but we should do that for ourselves, not an application. It’s the second book I read by Cal Newport and I don’t really like his writing.

Among using expressions like „High School Superstar“ it’s the entire attitude that you can frequently find among those internet „entrepreneurs“ I highly dislike! It‘s their superior attitude going on my nerves and all of their books are structured the exact same way…
